IRC Connectivity

IRC

Internet Relay Chat

IRC is a place where we woodworkers can gather to discuss techniques, tips and just talk about our daily lives.

This means we're not locked into talking strictly about woodworking - we have fun.

Announcements will be made on the list whenever a special topic is being discussed but, for the most part, you can log on at any time and chat with whoever is in the room.

How to connect to IRC

The absolute easiest, fall-off-a-log simplest way to connect onto our chat channel is to log onto:

click on #sawdusters

Enter your name/nickname

An example of your name would be...ugghhh, let's say your name is Bob then you enter Bob.  But, let's say Bob is a test pilot and he wants to use a nickname, then Bob can log on as CrashandBurn or BailingOutBob.

Click on Enter and you're in the room.

The next easiest way to connect to our channel is to use Chatzilla, which is an add-on feature for the Mozilla Firefox web browser.  I have to tell ya, this is one of the sweetest IRC clients I have ever used.  It has a ton of features, it's free and you'll enjoy using it.  And, I'm gonna show you, yes you, how to arrange Chatzilla so that from now on you don't have to do nothing beyond performing a simple click and the client will start and then you'll automagically log on with your nickname and you can start bullsh...err, telling those in the room about your day in the shop or whatever you want to  talk about.

First off, you MUST have Firefox installed on your system for Chatzilla to work!  If you don't have Firefox then go here...

Once installed, launch it then go up in the menu bar click on Tools then scroll down to find Chatzilla.  If you don't see it there then you must return to the link I just gave you:

Click on Firefox Add-ons.

Click on Favorite Add-ons.

Scroll down to Chatzilla - at the next screen click on Install Now - it will ask you to restart Firefox - say yes.

When it restarts, go back to the Tools menu, scroll down and click on Chatzilla.

A screen pops up - in the dead center is *client* and some mumbo-jumbo down below - pay no attention to it, it's mumbo-jumbo.

Down in the absolute lower left corner is a box that possibly contains your real name.  Click on the black arrow next to it.  A box pops up.  Click on "Change Nickname".  Another box

pops up - enter your new nickname.

Directly above your newly named nickname box is a smaller box that says *client* - we're going to change that.  See the long white bar immediately to the right of your nickname?  That is where you enter all commands and type all your words of wisdom you want to share with those assembled in the room.

Click on that box then type in...

/server irc.gigo.com

Hit Enter (hitting the Enter key sends whatever is in that white box to either the IRC server as a command or to those in the room), you are now connected to our IRC server.

Notice there are now two little boxes above your nickname box;  *client* and irc.gigo.com - right click on the *client* box and select "Close Tab".

Now, we're going to set up your very own personalized logon sequence.

Type in /join #sawdusters

Notice there are now two boxes above your nickname box.

Right click on irc.gigo.com - scroll down and select "Open This Network at Startup"

Next, right click on the #sawdusters box - scroll down and select  "Open This Channel at Startup"

Type /quit

Chatzilla will close - go back to the menu bar and click on Tools then scroll down to Chatzilla.  Notice that you automagically join the channel with your nickname right there for all in the room to welcome you with open arms or, depending upon your demeanor, with

rotten tomatoes.

Now, let's say you have a special nickname and that you want to protect it because you certainly don't want to see someone else logging on with another boring name of, say, Bob.  After all, you are the only Bob in the World, right?  So what you want to do is register your nickname so that no one else in the entire World can log onto our channel and pretend they're you.

In the box type:

/network-pref autoperform msg nickserv register <password>

/network-pref autoperform msg nickserv identify <password>

<password> is where you supply your password minus the <>.

type /quit - Chatzilla closes - launch Firefox again, go to Tools scroll down to Chatzilla.  Now, when Chatzilla opens your registered nickname is recognized and you'll automagically log on to our channel.

It's important to mention that Chatzilla, on YOUR computer, is where you're registered and it will remember to input all this for you every time you connect.  However, let's say you go to your buddy's house and he's a real nerd and he's too skert to "walk" into a room by himself what's full of idjits talking about ww'ing but you convince him it's alright to come outta the closet.  What do you do to show him it's Ok?

Well, you first launch Chatzilla then you type in:

/msg nickserv identify <password> (but don't let him see the password or else he can log on as you and there you'll be, nickless because he stole your nick).

Nickserv identifies you, and, presto, you're in the room with your very own special nick of "Bob" or whatever.

The other forms of connecting to IRC are by using other IRC clients such as mIRC and PIRCH where the former is a paid client and the latter a free client.  When you set them up you'll want to set irc.gig.com as the server and use port 6667 - beyond that, you're on your

own.

I highly recommend using Chatzilla
